Japan-Russian Relations

 Japan (日本) is an island nation in East Asia. It is a stratovolcanic archipelago of 6852 islands, with the four largest being Honshu, 500px-Regions_and_Prefectures_of_Japan_2.svgHokkaido, Kyushu, and Shikoku, which together comprise of about ninety-seven percent of Japan’s land area. Its capital, Tokyo (東京), officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都) is the most populated metropolitan area in the world.

The Russiarussian Federation (Российская Федерация), more commonly known as simply Russia, is a country in northern Eurasia. It extends across much of Eastern Europe and the entirety of northern Asia, and spans nine time zones while incorporating a wide range of environments and landforms.

Since the defeat of Japan by the Allied forces in World War II, Japan and Russia, then the Union of Soviet Socialist Republics, have had tense diplomatic relation, with the main issue beings several islands. These include Sakhalin Island, which both Japan and Russia claim ownership over, and the Kuril Islands, which the Soviet Union seized in 1945 just after the Japanese surrender to the Allied Powers. Various attempts have been made to resolve this dispute, however, nationalistic pride has been a barrier since essentially World War II. As such, Japan and Russia have been unable to sign a peace treaty for 70 years.
